Startup uses AI to fight art forgeries--with hyper-realistic copies

Popular Science

Art knockoffs generate between $4 and $6 billion annually. Morrisseau's estate is working with Acrylic Robotics to combat art forgeries. Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent every weekday. A new weapon in the fight against fine art forgeries may, ironically enough, be a robot "painter" capable of composing nearly indistinguishable copies of renowned works. Canadian startup Acrylic Robotics is currently working with the estate of the late Canadian Indigenous artist Norval Morrisseau to create highly sophisticated replicas of his catalog using an AI-trained robotic painting system.

How a startup uses AI to put worker safety first

#artificialintelligence

Unpredictable spikes and drops in demand combined with chronic supply chain and labor shortages are accelerating the pace of digital transformation in manufacturing, starting with worker safety. Forty-eight percent of manufacturers say their progress on digital transformation initiatives has accelerated so much that it's years ahead of what was originally anticipated, according to a KPMG study. Keeping workers safe and connected is the primary goal of most digital transformation and hiring plans, with on-site distancing & workplace safety listed as the two highest priorities. The company's SENTRI360 platform proves effective in preventing workplace injuries and operational downtimes at several steel-heavy manufacturing companies, including Zekelman Industries and SeAH Besteel. From redesigning shop floors, to meeting social distancing guidelines, and doubling their investment in training and development, worker safety now dominates manufacturing -- even more so due to the pandemic.

How this Startup Uses AI to Automate Lease Accounting

#artificialintelligence

In theory, few industries are set up for the disruptive powers of AI as perfectly as accounting. The work of most modern accountants involves retrieving, presenting, and analyzing data from a range of transactions, which are essentially repeated over and over. All the while, they've got to ensure that they've compiled with the relevant accounting standards. Their work is, with respect to all of the fine accountants out there, the bread and butter of artificial intelligence. However, until recently, disruption in accounting was impeded by the depth and complexity of paperwork involved in some areas.

How my startup uses AI to reimagine water utilities

#artificialintelligence

History repeats itself, but it doesn't have to. I was inspired to launch my startup, Varuna, when Austin Water released its first-ever boil water warning in 2018 -- a moment eerily similar to the massive winter storm in Texas just a few weeks ago. Because the water utility companies didn't have enough real-time data to measure water quality in individual neighborhoods, they took the blanket approach of asking all of the city's 950,000 residents to boil any water ingested through drinking or cooking. After several days of substantially reducing water usage -- and seeing more than 625,000 plastic bottles of water handed out across the city -- I set out to find a solution. A systems engineer by trade and a problem-solver by nature, I repurposed our dishwasher's sensor to create my first water-quality measurement device.

Former Walmart Exec's Startup Uses AI To Battle Spoiled Produce Deliveries

#artificialintelligence

Hwy Haul uses a digital platform to match shipments with truckers. As Director of Supply Chain, Syed Aman spent several years making sure when produce reached Walmart WMT stores, it wasn't rotten. Now, as CEO and co-founder of Hwy Haul, he's using what he learned to give other supermarkets the same insurance, because it's not just a few bad apples spoiling the whole bunch. "Produce spends half its life in the supply chain and more than $15 billion is wasted or rejected in transit every year," said Aman. "On average 14% of the produce shipments get rejected." The lingering Covid-19 pandemic has only exacerbated the problem with supply chain disruptions and strict packaging requirements by top retailers such as Walmart and Target TGT adding to the complexity of getting fruit and vegetables from farm to produce shelves while still fresh, Aman said.

This startup uses AI to check out rooftops for insurance purposes

#artificialintelligence

California-based startup Cape Analytics uses artificial intelligence (AI) to check out your rooftop for insurance purposes. By analysing aerial imagery, the company can tell insurers the condition of your roof, as well as automate away human inspectors originally meant for the purpose. Most of the imagery comes from airplanes, although drones and satellites also play a role, chief executive and co-founder Ryan Kottenstette told Forbes. He added that Cape Analytics also takes in Earth observations from Google. Deep analysis distinguishes Cape from other imagery analytics firms such as Orbital Insight, Kottenstette said in the Forbes report.

Startup uses AI to relieve burden of security data analysis - SiliconANGLE

Loom Systems Ltd. is joining the growing ranks of companies applying artificial intelligence to the task of making sense out of the mass of data that overwhelms security professionals. The company today is announcing an operational analytics platform for real-time detection and resolution that reads log files and looks for anomalies. The Tel Aviv-based company says it does this by mathematically modeling the ways in which humans analyze such data, and then simulating the process via machine learning. It correlates each metric to baseline patterns in order to detect anomalies and predict future trends. The result is what the company claims is a 45 percent reduction in mean-time-to-resolution and a 93 percent reduction in log file clutter.

This Startup Uses AI to Get you Pregnant

#artificialintelligence

Can you get pregnant using Artificial Intelligence? One American startup is trying to make it so. Mira Care, which SHACK15 News met up at CES 2018, has designed a gadget that harnesses machine learning to track hormone levels, and suggest how likely a user is to conceive a baby at a given time. Users just need to pee on a test stick and insert it in the device; then, Mira's algorithm will blend data from the sample with information about each user's fitness and life habits in order to calculate a fertility score, which will be shown on a mobile app. Mira's AI-powered device and its linked app showing a user's fertility score (via Mira Care) "One difference with any other menstrual cycle tracker is personalization," company CEO Zheng Yang said."It China-born Yang, who earned a PhD in Physics and for ten years has tried to apply mathematical and physical models to biomedical problems, also underlined that the tool and the algorithm have been tested in official clinical trials-- over 200 cases in total-- which have pegged Mira's has a 99 percent accuracy at predicting one person's chances of conceiving a baby. Yang said that the device--which has been approved by US medical authority FDA--is going to be launched on the US market in the second quarter of 2018 (and in Europe shortly after). He added that Mira is going to be followed by a string of similar AI-fuelled home diagnostic gadgets. "We are working on a product line that focuses on several diseases: like infectious diseases, chronic diseases, kidney function,"he told SHACK15 News."We're

These startups use AI to "optimize" marketing messages

#artificialintelligence

In a world where artificial intelligence (AI) is gaining traction and being applied in a variety of ways, is it really possible for AI to do intuitive things better than humans can, such as marketing messaging? Marketing messaging seems like something that takes human brain power to fully develop, understand, and formulate to optimize return, so could an AI-powered service offer better results? Several startups are aiming to do just that. They are utilizing AI to help optimize marketing messages and better deliver marketing and email campaigns that help increase open rates, conversion rates, click-through rates, and overall increase the ROI on marketing. One of those startups harnessing the power of AI is Persado.
